A pot bunker is basically a normal bunker. A bunker with normal sand but the only difference is that is has a very steep face compared to a normal bunker that might be on a slight incline. A pot bunker has a very very steep face. So for most players this is a reason to get scared especially when the ball is just in front of this ‘huge wall of grass’.
How do you get this ball out of this pot bunker?
In such a situation you kind of like to play a ball which comes straight vertical of your club face, land softly and runs slowly to the hole.
The key for this shot is the set up. This has to be right (like in all bunker shots and other lob shots). This in
combination with the setting of the club. Making sure that the loft of the club is exactly right.
Couple steps to do:
- you aim at the whole and put your club head down perpendicular (like a cross) to the line to the whole. This is of course only for practice as you’re not allowed to ground in a competitive game.
- you need to see how high you need the ball to get in the air
- you drop the club backwards in a way that the leading edge of the club doesn’t change of position. This edge still aims at the target. So you create more loft with the club head.
- the club is now behind you and also quite low, so you have to adjust your position.
- you bring your belly button towards the but of your club by walking around your club, which stays in the same position. By doing this the result is that the club aims at the pin but your feet have a much different line.
- you make your full swing as a normal bunker shot; through the sand parallel to the position of your feet.
Note that it feels like you are aiming left of the flag, which isn’t. Now you know why.
Good luck with the practice.
The most famous course which has Pot Bunkers is by any means The Old Course of St. Andrews In the above shown video Amy Aints, the director of golf of this course explains how to get out of one of these famous pot bunkers.
