“to your left is a beautiful gate at Uilenburg number 14”

Coming up on your left is a beautiful gate at Uilenburg number 14. This gate gave access to a so-called hidden church. These churches had become a necessity, because after the liberation from the Spaniards the Catholic faith was no longer allowed. Frederik Hendrik van Oranje had liberated Den Bosch in 1629 at the end of the Eighty Years’ War and argued for religious freedom in Den Bosch, but the States General had decided to prohibit the open practice of Roman Catholicism. But, the inhabitants of Den Bosch refused to give up their faith. This is how hidden churches arose all over the city.

This little church was part of ‘Huys van Boxtel’ and had first been a brewery and was converted into a clandestine church in 1644.

Keep going straight.
