Keep going.
At the intersection where you just were, was once the St. John’s city gate. Partly because of this, Uilenburg was a busy district. It was the entrance to the center of the city for anyone coming from the west. Uilenburg was also closely associated with the harbor and the fish market. Craftsmen in all kinds of fields offered their services here. As a result, the neighborhood was not clean, which in turn resulted in high death rates among the residents.
Especially in 1866 during the cholera epidemic as well as during the smallpox epidemic of 1870 there were many victims. In 1874 a new fortification law was passed for Den Bosch, so that the inhabitants could also settle outside the city walls. As a result, the Uilenburg fell into disrepair. In 1975, the so-called ‘Monument Year’, a costly renovation was started. Several houses were merged and the existing buildings were refurbished.
This is how this atmospheric neighborhood was created, with its facade poems, monumental buildings and car-free alleys, paved with cobblestones. The Uilenburg district is nowadays popular with the residents of Den Bosch themselves, as well as the many visitors to the city.
