Sweet Dear little Gerrit in Den Bosch bij de binnedieze
canal cruise on the binnendieze in Den Bosch

“In 1969 the Binnendieze was designated as a protected cityscape”

Stop for a moment at this intersection with the Korenbrugstraat in front of you, while I point out a few things.

To the left of you, down on the bank of the Binnendieze, is the statue of Zoete Lieve Gerritje, in English; Sweet Dear little Gerrit. There is also a popular Dutch folklore song: ‘Dat gaat naar Den Bosch toe, Zoete lieve Gerritje’ which means; ‘That goes to Den Bosch, Sweet dear little Gerrit’. The statue depicts a singing woman with a rooster on a wicker basket next to her. This symbolizes how the women used to walk around the market. Zoete Lieve Gerritje was created in 1953 as a folklore figure by former tourist office director Jan Bruens.

Right in front of you in the Korenbrugstraat, but also on the left of you in the Lepelstraat it is all fun in the catering establishments. It is known as Uilenburg, which is also the name of the oldest district of Den Bosch, the neighborhood that you will soon continue to walk through.

Right in front of you, down on the bank of the Binnendieze, are the electric boats that take you on a tour of the various water streams that run through, but also under, the houses of the city center. Once 12 km in length, today, thanks to the help of many volunteers, 4 km of it is still accessible. If you take a cruise, you will be amazed by the tranquility that is still possible in this busy city center. The skipper will tell you how these waters were once used by merchants and later used as sewers. It was not until 1969 that the Binnendieze was designated as a protected cityscape. Between 1971 and 1998 it was completely restored, resulting in this wonderful cruise option.

We’re going to keep moving now, but remember, there is no rush and you can come and go as you please. The route will soon turn right here, but you can feel free to take a look at one of the nice bars or cafes. You can close off the tour while you do, and resume from the nearest location when you’re ready to keep going.

Now, turn right to walk through the Molenstraat. You’ll shortly arrive at the Uilenburg with its beautiful old crooked buildings.
