“The gatehouse was inaugurated in 1424 by the Sisters of Orthen”

Keep going.

The gatehouse that you will shortly walk under was inaugurated in 1424 by the Sisters of Orthen. They settled on the Groote Stroom, or the Binnendieze, as it was called in this place. This building was the gatehouse that gave access to the monastery. It was used as such for years, but eventually fell into disrepair. It collapsed after the Second World War, partly due to poor maintenance. It has been replaced by a replica, which has been used for various purposes.
