“Since the revolution of 1821 the Greek flag has consisted of a white cross within a blue square”

Take the turn to the left onto the old paved pathway. While walking up you can start enjoying the view over the sea. If you look up, on your right hand side, you can see the Greek flag, waving in the sea breeze.

There are several stories about the Greek flag. Since the revolution of 1821 the Greek flag has consisted of a white cross within a blue square and nine blue and white stripes.

The cross comes from the symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church. The nine stripes stand for the word ‘Elefteria’, which means ‘freedom’ in the Greek language. Every stripe represents one letter. At the same time the blue and white stripes symbolize the sea. When the flag flies in the wind the blue and white stripes are like the waves of the sea. Another theory for the blue and white colours of the Greek flag, would be because the original Greeks where fair-haired with blue eyes.
