"the Christmas story on the south east side has been depicted for centuries"
Stop here for a moment.
What makes the St. John’s church so unique are the total of 600 statues that sit above the windows of the choir, in the south portal and on the flying buttresses of the nave. For example the Christmas story here on the south east side that has been depicted for centuries in twelve groups of statues in the Wimpergs above the windows. The performances are based on the story as the evangelists wrote it in the Bible.
The story begins with the image that bears the name "Mary in the Temple." It shows two people. On the right a woman holding a book, on the left a man with a Jewish scroll in his hands. This priest guides Mary in the holy scriptures. The first Wimperg images were made around the year 1400. However, they suffered enormously from the Dutch climate. They were therefore replaced around 1930 by newly made copies. And these had to be replaced again. The most recent were made in 1984.
Let's keep moving. Continue walking along the fence.
