“The historical museum has a rich historical collection of personal belongings”

On your right is the Historical museum. Please stop here for a moment.

The museum was founded in 1974 and is housed in a Venetian building dating back to the 17th century. It is a wonderful example of Cretan Renaissance style urban residence. The exhibition spaces cover eight halls and present items of traditional handicraft work and folklore art. The collections include more than 5000 items of all kinds of sections. From weaving and embroidery to pottery and traditional farming.

It also has a rich historical collection of personal belongings. For example from former Cretan revolutionary Eleftherios Venizelos, who became the prime minister of Greece later in his career. A lot of items are from the period that Crete was an independent country in the period from 1898 till 1913.

If you would like to visit the museum, you can close off the tour. When you’re done, come back to this spot and start it again by choosing ‘Resume’.

Otherwise if you want to keep going, just continue straight ahead.

As you walk, please look up and be amazed by the beauty of the Minaret of Rethymnon.
