Turn right into Korte Putstraat and keep going.
And you have now arrived at perhaps the most popular street or alley. As we say in Den Bosch; ‘in the Korte Put’, translated into English is Short Well.
Today, a street full of cosy cafes, restaurants and bistros, it used to be a different setting. Forges, coppersmiths, carpenters and warehouses. Even a primary school with the special name ‘Den Tripen’. This name was derived from the old word for a slipper with a wooden heel, a trip. Nice to see that café ‘t Pantoffeltje, which is Dutch for a small slipper has been located in the same building for years now. And this after it had also been a bicycle workshop.
There is a nice story associated with that bicycle workshop, because it was run by the father of one Henri Bakker. Militair Bakker was an air force pioneer. He is considered to be the first pilot in the Dutch Air Force. In 1911 he flew for the first time above the Pettelaarse Schans, a former bastion in Den Bosch South, where a monument still reminds us of this action.
