“Amadeiro square is to honour the Oeteldonk carnival prince.”

Turn right here into Kerkstraat.

In front of you, you’ll see the Dutch Reformed Church, also known as the Grote Kerk or Protestant Church. In the foreground is a bronze model of Den Bosch circa 1550. It was made by the German Egbert Broerken for the Historic City Model Foundation. The scale model has a scale of 1:800 and depicts the old city gates very nicely.

The square is popularly called het kerkpleintje, the little church square, but has been given the official name Amadeiroplein.  Amadeiro is the name of the Oeteldonk carnival prince.

In 1810 Emperor Napoleon returned St. John’s cathedral to the Catholics and as a result the Protestant community no longer had a big church, so a new church was built with the money obtained from the Catholics. This was built on the site where the medieval Saint Anne’s chapel was demolished, thus here on this square.

Walk further through the Kerkstraat.
