“The Golden Dragon is placed in memory of a deceased wife and twin daughters”

Keep going.

At the start of this city walk you will immediately notice two special features of Den Bosch. The dragon fountain with the recently restored Golden Dragon as the highlight. The other is Bakery Jan de Groot, which we’ll pass shortly.

The fountain has one golden and four bronze dragons. It was built in 1903 with money from Jonkheer Bosch van Drakenstein and is placed in memory of his deceased wife and twin daughters, who died in 1881 at the age of 17. ‘s-Hertogenbosch, as Den Bosch is officially called, was nicknamed ‘Swamp Dragon’ during the Eighty Years’ War with Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries, because of its location between various wetlands.
