Stop for a moment at the corner.
The name ‘Behind the Gilded Harness’ was actually the name of the first house that stood on the corner here. It has been replaced by this round building. So the canal ran in front of the original building. The canal, or the Binnendieze, was later vaulted and you can conclude that you are now walking over the Binnendieze.
This city walk turns left here, before the street name changes to ‘Achter het Wild Varken’, which means ‘Behind the Wild Pig’.
Before doing so, hold on for a second while I tell what was at the end of this street.
In ‘Behind the Wild Pig’ used to be the post house, from which the stagecoach left for Maastricht, among others. In 1867 a beautiful building was erected here for the society De Katholieke Kring, The Catholic Circle. This society of mainly younger men had previously used café Place Royaal, which is said to be the café where the Oeteldonk carnival originated.
A little further down the road is now the municipal office. The Wolvenhoek car park is situated diagonally opposite. In front of you to the right you will see the bus stop that takes car users back to the P+R at the Jeroen Bosch hospital. So this is an ideal position to start this route if you have come to Den Bosch by car. I therefore welcome everyone here who has come to the capital of the province of Noord Brabant in this way.
Now, turn left now and walk down the street with the name ‘Achter het Stadhuis’, which means ‘Behind the Town Hall’.
