“Mariënburg building has architectural-historical value”

On your right-hand side, behind the monastery gardens, the buildings of the Mariënburg will soon appear. Stop for a moment and have a look inside this garden.

It is a former convent for the Sisters of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (JMJ). The chapel was already built by 1488. The foundation for the monastery was laid in 1897, after which the monastery was completed in 1899 and immediately put into use. The monastery building has architectural-historical value in the Neo-Gothic style, typical of Catholic monasteries and boarding schools around 1900. During the Second World War, the building was used for food storage, among other things. On the so-called ‘mad Tuesday’ (5 September 1944), the Nazi occupiers left the building in a hurry, after which the monastery was looted by the local population. Because of the large amount of alcohol that was discovered, this day is also known in Den Bosch as ‘cognac Tuesday’.

Since 2001 the complex has been a national monument.

In 2015, the society decided to sell the monastery complex. But despite the sisters having left the building, it has retained its educational function. Since 2016, the first university of ‘s-Hertogenbosch has been established, the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science.

The campus also has 77 furnished apartments, meeting rooms and more than 3,500 m2 of office space.

In the monastery garden you can also admire a giant sequoia, a Sequoiadendron giganteum. It was planted around 1900 and it is said that this tree, with a height of more than 27 meters and a width of more than 3.5 meters, is the largest tree in Den Bosch.

When you’re ready, leave the garden via the other gate and make your way towards the small bridge opposite the garden.
